Why it wants that
A small forest-floor plant that stores water in thick leaves and stems: it evolved under canopy, so bright diffuse light suits it and the succulence buys it tolerance of both dim corners and dry soil.
Too little light
Growth stalls and the plant stretches; NC State notes it 'tolerates low light for several months without stress, especially non-variegated cultivars', so the symptom is slowness rather than collapse - variegated cultivars lose their pale patches first.
Too much
Leaves burn - NC State: 'Sunlight that is too strong or direct will burn the leaves.'
