Why it wants that

It is an understorey stem from tropical Africa, built to hold a long-lived crown of leaves on a stored-energy cane through years of dim light - which is exactly why it survives a corridor, and why raw sun scorches it.

Too little light

The new leaves come in visibly narrower than the old ones, and the foliage thins from the bottom of the crown, leaving more bare cane on show.

Too much

Round dry patches and pale streaks scorch into the leaf blades where the direct beam lands.
